Kuhse control systems ensures power supply in Costa Rica

In Garabito, situated in the west of the country close to the city of Puntarenas, the largest diesel power plant in Costa Rica was constructed in order to support the national grid and expand the infrastructure. 200 MW of electricity is produced using eleven MAN diesel engines of type 18V48/60 in conjunction with ABB generators (each 23 MVA, 13.8 kV). The state energy supplier Grupo ICE (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad) covers 10% of the power supplied to the entire country with this power station alone.

Kuhse received the award for the delivery and commissioning of the switchgear for the control, low voltage distribution and auxiliary drives for the plant. In addition, Kuhse also carried out the planning of the installation and the configuration of the electrical protective elements.
Due to the high environmental standards on the part of the government, the CO2 emissions in Costa Rica are to be considerably reduced - in part through the closure of coal-fired power stations. In order to comply with the strict environmental regulations in Costa Rica and those of the World Bank, a system was constructed for cleaning the exhaust gases from the diesel power plant by means of electrostatic filters.
